The citizens of Osterholz-Scharmbeck - together with other communities - can offer a regional special feature, the Teufelsmoor. Part of the Teufelsmoor's area is among others the Osterholzer-Scharmbeck village Teufelsmoor, whose coat of arms is decorated with a devil.

The name Teufelsmoor is based on a translation mistake. In the beginning one called the moor "Duvesmoor", whereby one meant a meagre, barren bog. Later it became "Düwelsmoor" and by re-translating it into High German it was finally "Teufelsmoor". This name is also understandable as people in earlier times found the moor to be impassable, mysterious and scary. One could image this as the devil's lounge.

Maybe you have the opportunity to inform yourself about the history of bog colonisation and the peat cutting at the District Museum or take part in at moor walk.
